Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team has won three games in a row for the first time since 2010. But this last one was frustrating.
The Raptors defeated Southern Vermont College, 1-0, in a non-league contest on Wednesday night. The frustrating part? The Mountaineers played a man down for the better part of 70 minutes and although Bard dominated possession, they couldn't get the ball past Southern Vermont keeper Cody Gross (Fair Lawn, NJ).
In fact, the only goal of the game was scored while the teams were at even strength. Sophomore
Austin Higgins ran onto a beautifully placed through ball from freshman
John Flynn and ripped a high shot into the upper left corner to give Bard a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
A couple of minutes later, Southern Vermont went down a player when a starter got injured. They had no reserves.
But the Raptors (3-1) didn't get anything past Gross after that point, in spite of having a clear edge in possession, shots (20-5) and corners (6-0). Higgins had three shots on goal himself, while
Shaw McCabe and
Antonio Scanni had two apiece, but Gross made nine saves and a Southern Vermont defender also stopped and cleared one ball off the line.
Taylor Bond made four saves for Bard.
Up next for the Raptors is a test: SUNY Potsdam (4-1-1). A Bard victory would mean the first four-game winning streak for the men's soccer team since 2006. Follow that game on Saturday at noon via Live Stats if you can't make it.
