SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - It was too little, too late.
The Union College women's basketball team jumped out to a 12-0 lead, pushed the edge to 20, then held off a Bard rally down the stretch en route to a 52-43 Liberty League victory on Wednesday night.
The Dutchwomen shot 52 percent from the field in the first half - while Bard was shooting 26 percent - and had a 21-12 rebounding edge to take a 34-16 lead into halftime.
Bard made a push in the second half and cut the deficit to 10 three times, before cutting to nine, then seven with 43 seconds left in the game. Union was held to 18 second-half points and shot 20 percent in the last 20 minutes, but the Raptors couldn't get over the hump and fell to 1-20 overall, 1-12 in the Liberty League.
Union (13-7, 5-6 Liberty League) got 15 points from freshman Natalie Leone (Ashland, MA) and points from 10 other players in the win.
The Raptors were led by
Bianka Bell, who had 15 points, and
Tytravia Riley, who finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
