ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - After going 1-24 last season, the Bard College women's basketball team has been forced to adjust to some new experiences so far this winter.
For example, they've had to get used to playing close games. Heading into Tuesday night's game against College of New Rochelle, all six of Bard's games had been decided by 10 points or less.
But this game provided something even more rare. Bard ran out to an early lead and never relinquished it, cruising to a 60-46 victory, its second in a row. The Raptors are above .500 at 4-3 for the first time since January of 2013.
If leading from start to finish isn't enough, consider that the Raptors didn't play what they would consider their best game and still won going away. It turns out Bard's first game decided by more than 10 points is a 14-point victory.
Bard junior
Tytravia Riley put on a show. Facing New Rochelle senior Jah-Leah Ellis (Harlem, NY), who entered the game averaging 22 points and 17 rebounds per game, Riley had seven points and 14 rebounds in the first half alone, while holding Ellis to five points and four rebounds. Yes, Riley had help on defense as the Raptors played mostly a zone defense, but she was clearly fired up for the game and played that way.
Bard ran out to a 7-0 lead, then when the Blue Angels got to within 12-11, went on a 9-0 run and took a 25-17 lead into halftime. Bard's rebounding edge was 25-13 after 20 minutes.
New Rochelle (5-4) didn't get closer than seven the rest of the way. Riley finished with 21 points, 19 rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block. Three other players -
Joanna Regan,
Bianka Bell and
Andra Moye - had seven points each, and senior
Liz Freud added four points and seven rebounds.
Alyssa Pechin (Yonkers, NY) led the visitors with 20 points - 15 in the second half. Ellis finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Raptors will host Elms College on Saturday in their final game of the first semester. You can follow that contest via Live Stats or Live Video right here starting at 2.
