ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - There were about eight minutes left in the first half on Thursday night when things gradually started to change.
With Bard and Sage locked in a tight, defensive struggle, and the Gators holding a 15-12 edge with 8:19 until the break, Sage found a little bit more to give on defense, and it proved to be the difference in the game.
Sage outscored Bard 21-10 over those last eight minutes and cruised to a 65-49 non-league win.
Six of the Raptors' 15 first-half turnovers came in those last eight minutes as Sage's pressure started to work. The bulge grew from 14 at halftime to 22 just a few minutes into the second half, and although Bard eventually cut the deficit to 13 with seven minutes left, 27 total turnovers and 33 percent shooting from the field became too much to overcome.
Junior Megan Bowman (Dannemora, NY) and sophomore Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY) led the Gators (5-4) with 14 points apiece. Bowman added six assists and five of Sage's 16 steals.
Bard (1-8) got a monster of an effort from sophomore
Tytravia Riley. She had 15 points, 19 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Bianka Bell added 13 points and four assists, and
Joanna Regan finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
It was the last of Bard's non-league games. Sixteen Liberty League contests remain, beginning Tuesday when RPI comes to town. Tip is at 6 p.m.
