Tamaki Chiba had three goals and an assist, freshman
Austin Higgins had one goal and an assist, and freshman
Simon Simoski had two assists in Bard's 5-1 victory over Green Mountain College on Tuesday night.
The freshmen had a good night. Actually everybody did. It was Bard's largest margin of victory at home since a 5-0 win over Green Mountain here in 2010.
A trio of freshman got together to produce the first goal of the game.
Mark Mannara led
Simon Simoski deep into the left corner, and Simoski's low centering pass slipped through a couple of players before finding Higgins, who punched it past Green Mountain keeper Nate Laymon (Ilion, NY) with his left foot for a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
In the 31st minute, Mannara found Higgins on the left side, and his lofted cross was headed by Chiba over Laymon for a 2-0 lead, and it stayed that way until halftime. Bard outshot Green Mountain 13-5 in the first half.
Early in the second half, a long shot from Higgins was mishandled by Laymon, and Chiba pounced on the rebound for a 3-0 lead in the 50th minute. Chiba and Simoski combined to assist on Bard's next goal, a breakaway from senior
Christian Letourneau, so it was 4-0 in the 58th minute.
Green Mountain's Kevin Purdy (Rochester, NY) was taken down in the box a few minutes later, and Ryan Crozier (Olmsted, OH) converted the penalty kick to make it 4-1.
Chiba got behind the Eagles' defense, again, however, this time of a pass from sophomore
Marco Lorenz, and he finished the scoring and his first career hat trick in the 72nd minute.
Laymon made nine saves for Green Mountain, 2-6.
Daniel Gagne made two saves for Bard, 2-6. The Raptors next begin Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon at Union College. You can follow that game via Live Stats right here.
