Men's soccer team loses heartbreaker in overtime

Bard's Marco Lorenz (4) gets some help from Troy Robertson to move the ball out of Bard's defensive zone during Wednesday's game at Southern Vermont College.
Box Score BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Bard College men's soccer team came back from a one-goal deficit, then gave up a one-goal lead and eventually lost in overtime, 3-2, to Southern Vermont College on Wednesday afternoon.

The game-winner came in the 99th minute, when Southern Vermont senior Pierre Massena (West Milford, NJ) chipped a bounding ball over the head of Bard keeper Daniel Gagne, then retrieved it himself and headed it home for the Mountaineers' first win of the season.

Southern Vermont (1-6) got on the board first when sophomore Sean Deegan (Seymour, CT) hit a cross that ended up bouncing off several players in the box before senior Derek Snow (Centerville, MA) put it in the net for a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

Less than two minutes later, however, Bard freshman Tamaki Chiba knotted the game at 1-1 with a nice shot from the corner of the box after a corner kick. It remained 1-1 at halftime.

In the 58th minute, Bard senior Christian Letourneau and freshman Austin Higgins connected again, as they had in Sunday's win over Becker, when Letourneau's corner kick was headed home by Higgins, making it 2-1.

Snow tied it for the Mountaineers in the 77th minute off a cross from Ruben Olivares (Pico Rivera, CA).

Brendan Shea (North Providence, RI) made 10 saves for Southern Vermont.

Gagne made four saves for Bard (1-6).
