Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team dropped its season opener, 5-1, to Mount Saint Mary College in a non-league match on Friday night.
The Knights (1-0) dominated, particularly in the first half, when they outshot Bard, 18-0. It was 2-0 at halftime on goals by junior Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, NY) in the fifth minute and junior Chris Marchese (Cold Spring, NY) in the 23rd minute.
About nine minutes into the second half, Mount Saint Mary sophomore Michael Ennis (Carmel, NY) made it 3-0 before the Raptors (0-1) responded.
Freshman
Austin Higgins cut the Knights' lead to 3-1 in the 62nd minute, when he pounced on a misplay in back and scored inside the near post. It was Higgins' first collegiate goal.
Ennis scored his second goal of the game a few minutes later, and freshman Nick Blomfield (Warwick, NY) finished the scoring in the waning moments on a free kick from 25 yards.
Bard keeper
Daniel Gagne made six saves. Mount Saint Mary goalies Matt Darling (Staatsburg, NY) and Tyler Biscone (Garden City, NJ) each made one save.
