Raptors play Vassar tough, but Brewers are too much

Senior Imani Jones had 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals in a loss to Vassar on Tuesday night.
Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team tried to hang with defending Liberty League champion Vassar on Tuesday night.

For a few stretches, the Raptors did hang in there. But Vassar simply shot the ball too well and caused too many turnovers in a 71-46 Liberty League victory over Bard, scoring the final 11 points of the game as an exclamation point.

Box score

The Raptors (7-13, 1-10 Liberty League) were down 14-3 five minutes into the game, but put together an 8-0 run to make it 14-11. That was as close as Bard would get.

Vassar (14-4, 6-3 Liberty League) extended the lead to 14 by halftime, shooting 45 percent in the first 20 minutes to Bard's 31 percent.

For most of the second half, the Raptors didn't really threaten, but they didn't go away either. A layup by freshman Tytravia Riley cut Vassar's lead to 44-34 with 11:44 left in the game, but Vassar again pulled away, pushing the lead back to 18 just three minutes later. It didn't get closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Vassar got 15 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ), and 15 points, nine assists, four rebounds and four steals from junior Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA).

Riley led Bard with 24 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and two blocks; she entered the game as the national leader in rebounds per game. Senior Imani Jones added 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Raptors, who next host St. Lawrence University on Friday night at 6 p.m.
