Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team came within inches of losing its first game of the season on Saturday night.
And the Raptors also came within inches of improving to 2-0 for the first time since 2009.
In the end, they settled for a hard-fought 1-1 draw with SUNY Cobleskill in a non-league game. Bard is 1-0-1 on the season; it was the opener for SUNY Cobleskill.
Box score
The first half was played evenly, but the second half wasn't. Eight minutes into the second half, Bard senior
Chet Darrow settled a ball at the top of the box after a mad scramble initiated by a corner kick, and his lofted shot found it's way into the upper right hand corner of the goal.
The Fighting Tigers responded with a big push forward and great intensity. It paid off 10 minutes later when senior Joe Guiliano (Pine Bush, NY) chipped home a long throw-in from sophomore Josh Fontaine (Brookline, VT), and it was tied. But SUNY Cobleskill carried play for the rest of the second half, outshooting Bard 11-6 in those 40 minutes.
The Raptors still appeared to be on their heels for most of the first 10-minute overtime, but then found a second wind. With just under three minutes left in the second overtime, senior
Oscar Valdes fed junior
Vitor Neto Carvalho just inside the box, and Carvalho's shot rang off the near post. It was the last best chance for either team to break the deadlock.
SUNY Cobleskill keeper Mack Curran (Cooperstown, NY) finished with five saves. Up next for the Fighting Tigers is a Thursday road game against St. Joseph's College of Vermont.
Freshmen
Daniel Gagne and
Gabe Rudd split the minutes in goal; Gagne finished with four saves, Rudd with one. The Raptors will next play Sage at RPI on Tuesday night.
