Bard hangs tough early with powerful Vassar

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - If you're looking to attain some firsts for your women's basketball team in the Liberty League, you're not likely to do it against Vassar College.

The defending Liberty League champions boast the top-scoring offense in the league, the top scorer in the league, and they are the best-shooting team in the league.

On Tuesday night with just seven players suited up, Bard attained some firsts in a 79-36 loss to Vassar.

For the first time in league play, Bard shot a better percentage that its opponent over the course of an entire half. For the first time in league play, Bard has a single-digit deficit in the second half.

And Bard's 36 points were the most the Raptors have scored in league play all year.

It was all about the first half for Bard, and all about the second half for Vassar. In the first half, Bard shot 33 percent from the field, while Vassar shot 32 percent, and the Brewers uncharacteristically turned the ball over 11 times in the first 20 minutes. Bard was down 23-17 with just over four minutes to go in the half, but Vassar took a 27-17 lead into the break.

The Brewers (14-9 overall, 8-6 Liberty League) came out with a different approach in the second half. They ran, the pressed, they made their shots (57 percent) and didn't turn the ball over once. They scored 52 points in the second half.

Senior Brittany Parks (Escondido, CA) led the way with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, and freshman Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ) added eight points and 10 rebounds. The Brewers next host RIT on Friday night at 6.

Bard (1-22, 0-14) got 14 points and 10 rebounds from junior Imani Jones, who shot 7-for-10 from the field. Joanna Regan added seven points, and Cara Chalk collected six rebounds.
