Raptors suffer tough loss to Purchase

Tytravia Riley had 23 points and 20 rebounds, but Bard lost to Purchase, 65-57, on Saturday.
Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team finished the 2012 portion of the schedule with a frustrating loss to Purchase College, 65-57, on Saturday afternoon.

Frustrating because the Raptors turned the ball over a season-high 30 times, frustrating because Purchase shot an amazing 56 percent from the field, and really, really frustrating because Purchase pulled it off in spite of having the play the final 1:58 with only four players on the court.

Box score

Bard (6-3) got out to an early lead, but a 15-2 run turned the tables and the Panthers went into halftime with a comfortable 33-23 edge. Purchase shot 59 percent from the field in the first half.

After five minutes was gone in the second half, the lead had jumped from 10 to 20, and it looked like the game might be over.

The Raptors put together a 10-0 run over a 2 1/2-minute span to cut the deficit to 45-35 with 12:40 left in the game. And this is where it got interesting.

With 9:55 left in the game and Purchase up 51-38, Purchase sophomore Lineker St. Hilaire (Wyandanch, NY) fouled out. She had been a terror to that point, producing 15 points, five rebounds and an amazing seven steals. Just more than two minutes later, junior Jess Lindsay (Rochester, NY) fouled out with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Purchase was down to five players, and the two that were on the bench had done the most damage to that point.

Over the next few minutes, with both St. Hilaire and Lindsay out of the game, Purchase slightly extended its lead. Bard started to make a push just as the game reached five minutes to go, and cut the deficit to nine with 4:33 left.

The Raptors just couldn't break through. They missed a lot of foul shots in there (12-of-25 in the second half) and continued to turn the ball over, while Purchase made a foul shot once in a while (10-of-24 in the second half) and clung to its lead.

With 1:58 left, senior Alexis Billups (Chester, NY) fouled out, and Purchase had a 61-52 lead and nobody else on the bench to send out there. So they played with four.

Over those final two minutes, Bard turned it over three times, missed 3-of-6 foul shots, and went 1-for-7 from the field.

Bard was led by freshman Tytravia Riley, who had 23 points and 20 rebounds. She entered the week as the national Div. III leader in rebounds per game. Imani Jones added nine points and five rebounds.

Bard is off until Jan. 4, when it will kick off Liberty League play at Skidmore on Jan. 4.
