New Rochelle pulls away late to top Bard

Freshman Liz Freud had 17 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to New Rochelle on Wednesday night.
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team got down, 13-0, in the first seven minutes of Wednesday night's game at the College of New Rochelle.

The Raptors scored the next nine points to get back in the game.

Down 16 early in the second half, Bard rallied again, cutting the lead to six twice. But Bard simply ran out of rallies and eventually lost to New Rochelle, 53-42, in a non-conference game.

New Rochelle (3-3) shot the ball well (45 percent) in the first half and led, 35-20, at the break. But the Raptors (1-4) closed the gap with good defense, holding the Blue Angels without a point for a six-minute stretch in the first part of the second half. Bard got to within six a pair of times after layups by freshman Liz Freud, the final time with 13:04 left in the game.

But New Rochelle scored seven straight points, and never let Bard within 11 points of the lead down the stretch.

Freshman guard Alyssa Pechin (Yonkers, NY), the current Player of the Week in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference, led all scorers with 23 points. She played all 40 minutes.

Bard got 17 points and 10 rebounds from Freud, and 12 points and 15 rebounds from sophomore Imani Jones. Thirty-one turnovers certainly didn't help Bard's cause.

The Raptors next play a road contest on Saturday at Elms College at 2 p.m.
