POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - With snow falling heavily and the wind at their backs, the Vassar College men's soccer team made the most of an opportunity early in overtime to defeat Bard, 1-0, on Saturday in Liberty League match.
Bard's season ends with a 5-12-1 overall record, 0-7-1 in the Liberty League. Vassar (10-5-2, 4-3-1) is the fourth seed in the upcoming league playoffs and will face top seed and top-ranked St. Lawrence University on Wednesday.
Although Vassar carried most of the play on the frigid afternoon, Bard had a few opportunities. In the fifth minute, senior
Jonah Peterschild struck a long, hard shot from well outside the box and it rang off the crossbar. Two other opportunities hit the post - one actually hit the post behind the Vassar keeper and bounced back to him.
Vassar senior Sam Erlichson McCarthy got the golden goal when Jake Rabin sent a cross into the box, and Erlichson McCarthy skimmed it with the top of his head over the hands of Bard keeper
Deven Connelly.
Connelly made five saves is his last game. It was also the final game for fellow seniors
Jacob Hartog,
Sam Wendel,
Brendan Whittaker,
Stergios Mentesidis,
Jonah Peterschild and Damianos Lazarides.
