ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - It's true that Clarkson University men's soccer team had the better of the play on Saturday at Bard.
It's true that the game was still scoreless after 62 minutes.
It's true that Clarkson scored the eventual game-winner when freshman Trevor Blackwell (Pittsford, NY) flicked one in off a corner kick in the 63rd minute.
Whether Bard goalkeeper
Deven Connelly was obstructed by a Clarkson player at the crucial moment ... that's open to debate.
Clarkson defeated Bard, 2-0, in a Liberty League game here on Saturday. The Golden Knights carried play most of the afternoon, in the rain, wind and cold at the Ferrari Soccer & Lacrosse Complex.
When Clarkson sophomore Jacob Duff struck a corner kick late in the second half, the ball headed right for the center of the penalty area. Connelly never got to the ball - he never got close - and immediately after Blackwell's easy chip, Connelly and his teammates complained vigorously to officials that the keeper had been obstructed by a Clarkson player.
The result was a 1-0 lead for Clarkson, and a desperation push forward by Bard for the final 12 minutes of the game. That push eventually led to another Clarkson goal, this one by senior reserve Jon Gacioch (Palymyra, NY), who struck after a long run down the left side led to a breakaway, and he beat Connelly to make it 2-0.
In the end, Clarkson outshot Bard, 23-6, and allowed just two shots on goal. The Golden Knights did have to clear a ball off the line in the waning moments, but the threat was diverted. The Golden Knights are 4-6-1 overall, 2-1 in the Liberty League.
Bard is 3-8 overall, 0-3 in the Liberty League. Next up for the Raptors is another conference game on Saturday at Union at 2.
