ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In a crucial Skyline Conference game with playoff implications, both teams came away disappointed.
Bard and NYU-Polytechnic battled to a 1-1 draw on Saturday in front of a Family Weekend crowd at the Lorenzo Ferrari Soccer & Lacrosse Complex.
The Fighting Blue Jays got on the board first. They were dominating possession early in the game and it paid off with an own-goal in the 11th minute. NYU-Poly junior Adam Lakawicz (Butler, NJ) made a dangerous cross across the goalmouth, and a Bard defender, under pressure from behind, inadvertently directed the ball into his own goal.
Bard tied it up in the 39th minute. Junior
Jonah Peterschild (Orinda, CA) struck a beautiful free kick to the far post, where it was met by freshman defender
Christian Letourneau (Saco, ME), who leapt to head the ball behind the NYU-Poly keeper.
The first half in particular was filled with fouls, particularly from NYU-Poly, which collected 21 in the first half alone. The final tally on fouls was 23 for NYU-Poly, and eight for Bard.
NYU-Poly, 5-3-1 in the Skyline Conference and 11-5-2 overall, had the best chance to score in either overtime, when freshman Mohamed Ndou (Dakar, Senegal) blasted a shot from close range that was deflected off the crossbar by Bard goalie
Deven Connelly (High Falls, NY.)
Playoff seedings are still to be determined for the men. The conference quarterfinals are next weekend.
Bard, 5-3-1 in Skyline play and 7-8-1 overall, finishes the regular season with a road game at Yeshiva on Tuesday.
