The Bard College men's soccer team (5-6-1, 0-4-1 Liberty League) tied a closely contested affair on Saturday afternoon at Union (4-5-4, 0-1-2 Liberty League), getting its first point of the season.
The Raptors had five shots, with two on goal in the first half. At the 20th minute,
Cole Ewalt took a shot from outside the box that deflected off a defender and flew wide left.
Julian Landau made a key save with 11 minutes remaining in the first half, stopping Diego Pascual's point blank shot from crossing the goal line. The Raptors stormed the other way, allowing Frankie Pereira-Modica to attempt a shot on goal. The first half ended with a sliding block by
Henry Skeltis to keep the game at 0-0.
The Garnet Chargers held the corner advantage 4-0 heading into the locker room. This advantage was nullified in the second half, with each team mustering two.
After the break,
Julian Landau stayed tough in goal, saving a header from Owen Everett that came off of a Union cross. With a little over five minutes remaining, Landau saved a header from Pascual, jumping to retrieve the ball. In the late stages of the match, the Raptors did an amazing job of limiting the amount of time that Union had in Bard's defensive third, pressuring passes and making life difficult for the Garnet Chargers.
A centerpiece for Bard left the game late in the contest –
Brandon Alchy had to hop off on one leg in the final minute after giving everything to his team.
It is the first time in Bard's history that the Raptors have tied against Union.
Skeltis, Landau,
Zac Sparacio, and
Emmett Olson all played the full 90 minutes on the field. Landau also had five saves.
The Raptors will head to Potsdam to take on Clarkson Friday at 4 p.m.
Note: a previous version of this article incorrectly stated that this was the first time that Bard had recorded points in back-to-back seasons. This feat was accomplished in the 2014-2017 seasons.
