ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - It was clear early in Saturday's women's lacrosse game between Mount St. Mary and Bard that the visiting Knights were bound and determined to keep three-time All-Liberty League Honorable Mention selection
Melissa Rosenthal under wraps.
They did. They doubled her everywhere she went, and all six of her shots were saved.
But fellow senior
Caleigh DeCaprio made the most of the room she was afforded, breaking the Bard record she shared for goals in a game by scoring seven times in Bard's 14-7 victory. She was unstoppable, scoring three times in the first half and four times in the second half.
Ultimately, this victory was more about Bard's defense. The Raptors won the turnover battle going away, causing 13 of Mount's 25 turnovers, and won the ground ball battle 28-18.
Bard never trailed. DeCaprio scored three goals in the first 15 minutes, but the game slowed down considerably and the Raptors had a modest 5-3 lead at halftime.
The Raptors (3-0) scored three times in the first five minutes of the second half. DeCaprio scored, then assisted on a goal by
Emma Heffron, and
Rachael Yoder followed that one with an unassisted goal and it was 8-3 just like that.
The Knights (0-3) rallied to cut Bard's advantage to 9-6 with about 21 minutes left in the game, but five consecutive goals - three by Yoder and two by DeCaprio - slammed the door.
DeCaprio finished with seven goals, one assist, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Yoder had four goals, two assists, five draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Gillian Adkins scored twice and added seven ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Izabel Kickner and
Roxanne Rouskas split the goaltending duties, making five and two saves, respectively.
This was Bard's first-ever win over Mount St. Mary in women's lacrosse in six games, although the last meeting was in 2014.
Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, NY) led the Knights with two goals and an assist. Jackie Finkel (Warwick, NY) made 13 saves.
Up next for Bard is a non-league game at Plattsburgh State on Friday. Follow that game live right here.
