KINGSTON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's lacrosse team put on a dominating performance Wednesday evening, beating Purchase College, 17-2.
The Raptors' (2-0) opened the night by scoring on their first shot attempt, just a little over a minute into the match.
Freshman
Anthony Stanley rocketed a shot into the net off a pass from
Corey Rich, all of which was set up because of a Purchase turnover.
The Raptors followed up the Stanley goal with three more, as they pushed the score line to 4-0, with just over a little more than ten minutes gone in the first quarter.
John Palermo,
Emmet O'Connell and
Ian Shaw added the second, third and fourth goals respectively for Bard.
The Panthers of Purchase (0-1) responded by getting on the scoreboard via a goal from Dylan Gethicker (Lime Lake, NY), but Bard was just getting started offensively, as the flood gates opened for the hosts.
The Raptors proceeded to score the next 13 goals of the match, to go up 17-1, midway through the third quarter.
George Goceljak,
Sam Smith,
Blake Burnley and
Miles Lim all got in on the scoring, while Palermo, O'Connell, Stanley and Rich added numerous goals over the course of the game as well.
As for Purchase, the final score line wasn't a concern.
The program was playing in its first ever match as a varsity sport, and just looked excited to be out there playing for the first time.
However, the Panthers did have a memorable moment on the field Wednesday night, beyond playing in the program's first ever match, as one of their players scored an outstanding goal.
The highlight came in the third quarter, when Purchase's, Daniel Desaulniers (Watertown, CT), received the ball near midfield, before breaking away toward goal and making Bard defenders miss, as he took it himself and beat the keeper into the top-left corner.
The goal made the score line, 17-2, where it would finish scoring on the night, as Bard chose not to run the score up over the final period of play.
The Raptors not only outscored their opposition, they won all the necessary categories to give themselves the best chance to win. That included, outshooting Purchase, 42-20, recording less turnovers, winning 16-of-22 faceoffs, doubling up the Panthers on groundballs and clearing the ball on 17-of-18 chances.
For Bard, O'Connell led the way with four goals and an assist. Rich finished the night with the most points (six), as he scored three times and added three assists.
Stanley finished the night with five points (three goals, two assists), while Palermo (two goals, two assists) and Goceljak (one goal, three assists) each finished with four points.
Weston Bishop finished the night with a fantastic, 10-of-11 on faceoffs, and led the Raptors with seven groundballs.
Up next for Bard is a home contest with Neumann University on March 4th. The game will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be played at Dietz Stadium. You can follow it right here via Live Stats.
