COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team lost to SUNY Cobleskill, 66-62, in a non-league game on Tuesday night.
The Raptors (0-3) had four players finish in double figures and led for most of the game, but the hosts rallied late to improve to 2-2.
Bard led, 18-15, after the first quarter and the bulge grew to 13 late in the second quarter. The Fighting Tigers trimmed the deficit to 36-29 at halftime, then scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take the lead, 37-36.
Bard showed its toughness and responded with seven straight points, on a three-pointer by
Elena LeFevre and back to back buckets inside by
Alexis Akingbade. Bard's lead soon grew to nine, but Cobleskill trailed just 48-45 entering the fourth quarter.
The Raptors' lead was still three, 58-55, with four minutes left in the game. Cobleskill rallied again to make it 61-58, and Bard cut the lead to one twice in the final two minutes, the last time on a pair of clutch free throws by freshman
Erin Kennedy with 38 seconds left, making the score 63-62.
The Raptors had to foul a few times to stop the clock and push the Fighting Tigers into the bonus, and the strategy worked when Addy Lawson (Milford, NY) made one of two, giving Bard the ball, down 64-62, with 13 seconds left.
An inbounds play found Akingbade isolated on one side of the key. She made a move into the paint and pulled up for a short jumper. The ball went into the cylinder and rimmed out. Cobleskill made two more foul shots and the final score, 66-62, was the Fighting Tigers' biggest lead of the game.
Lawson finished with 21 points and eight rebounds for the winners.
Kennedy finished with 16 points to lead Bard in scoring, and she also grabbed six rebounds.
Caleigh DeCaprio and
Sarah Morris had 13 points apiece - DeCaprio added five assists and Morris had two blocks - and Akingbade finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Up next for Bard is a non-league game at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., on Nov. 28.
