POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - A four-goal run over the span of 2:03 cut a seven-goal deficit to three, but the Bard College women's lacrosse team ran out of time, and Old Westbury prevailed, 17-12, in the season opener for both teams at Marist College on Tuesday night.
Bard (0-1) never led. The Raptors got down 4-1, then trimmed it to 4-3, but it was 10-5 at halftime. It was 15-8 late in the game before Bard suddenly caught fire and made a charge.
Carla Sanchez made it 15-9 with an unassisted goal wtih 5:33 remaining;
Nicole Ellin made it 15-10 just over a minute later.
Barely another minute had passed when Ellin assisted on a goal by
Casey Witte, and Witte scored again just 23 seconds after that one, and it was 15-12 with 3:30 left in the game.
Old Westbury (1-0) secured the next two draw controls, however, and freshman Natasha Treuman's ninth and 10th goals of the game, 30 seconds apart, came at 1:36 and 1:06 to put the game away. Treuman, a freshman, could not be stopped. She scored 10 goals on 11 shots.
Witte scored four goals, and she had five draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Ellin finished with three goals an an assist, six draw controls and three ground balls.
Alexandra Clarke had three goals;
Marion Adams scored once and led Bard with six ground balls.
Carla Sanchez scored once and shared the team lead in caused turnovers with
Hannah Baird - they each had three.
Kaylynn Tran made six saves.
