SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Playing a man down against one of the better teams in the Liberty League, Bard never had a chance.
Senior
Brendan Whittaker (Oakland, CA) was issued a red card and ejected from the game 10 minutes in, and the Raptors went on to lose, 6-0, to Union College.
According to Bard coach Scott Swere, Whittaker fell as a shot was being taken in the box and his hand blocked the shot as he hit the ground. A red card was issued, and junior Sebastiaan Jansen (Cape Town, RSA) put it home for a 1-0 lead.
Marc Zeyak (Valatie, NY) scored about seven minutes later, and it remained 2-0 until halftime. The Dutchmen outshot Bard, 14-1 in the first half.
The second half saw more of the same as Bard tried to survive a man down. Four different Union players scored in the 49th, 53rd, 60th and 64th minutes, respectively. Union, which was in the "Also Receiving Votes' category of the latest NCAA Div. III poll this week, is 10-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the Liberty League.
Bard, 3-9 overall and 0-4 in the Liberty League, was held to one shot on goal. The Raptors next game is on Friday at 17th-ranked Hobart at 4 p.m.
